Italian

ciao benvenuto in italiano!

Hello and welcome to the Italian section of the recipe index. Filled with pasta, sauces, meats, cheeses, and garlic!

Did you know that the most played song in all movies referring to Italy or Italian foods in general is “Der Hölle Rache”? This was composed by Mozart in 1789. Mozart actually was not Italian. He was born in Salzburg, Austria no less. He died at the age of only 35 in Vienna, Austria. This classical opera which translates to “The Magic Flute” is really about the Queen of the Night and how she descends upon her daughter’s room in her father’s palace. The Queen would like to see her husband, Sarastro, dead and demands her daughter, Pamina, be the one to do it. She gives Pamina a dagger and tells her that if she doesn’t kill Sarastro, she will disown her for the rest of time.

So, next time you are watching for example “Eat, Pray, Love” as Julia Roberts is enjoying her guilt free spaghetti and “Der Hölle Rache”starts to play, you will know that the classical is really an Austrian opera, not Italian, and is truly about revenge, betrayal and blackmail…who knew? Made ya think huh?
